- 1884 – The completion of the Washington Monument in the US capital city – Washington, D.C.
- 1898 – Alfred Eisenstaedt, the photographer whose numerous photos were published in the famous magazine “Life” was born in Dirschau, West Prussia, Poland. He became one of the leading photojournalists in the world.

- 2006 – The release of images by NASA shows that there is a reasonably fresh occurrence of water on Mars. The photographs were taken by the American robotic space probe Mars Global Surveyor.
