    • 1957Egypt reopened the Suez Canal which connects the Mediterranean and the Red Sea to international traffic.
    • 1982 – The United States accused the Soviets of using poison gas in Afghanistan.
    • 2006Iran said that it would continue its nuclear research program despite the U.N. actions against it.
    • 2012Toyota recalled another 681,500 vehicles in the US, further hurting its reputation in the country.

    • 1817 – The New York Stock Exchange was founded. The NYSE at 11 Wall Street in New York City is the world’s largest stock exchange.
    • 1979 – The first ever compact disc (CD) was presented to the public. It was developed by Philips and Sony. The companies later collaborated to produce a standard format and CD players.
