Always Hope for the Best Even in the Worst of Situation

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” ― Oscar Wilde
“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” ― Oscar Wilde

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” These immortal lines come from a play, Lady Windermere’s Fan, written by Oscar Wilde. These lines imply that most people have their lives full of struggles and mired in tragic circumstances. However, there are still some people who are hopeful and look at the bright side of life. Which category of people do you belong to? Those ones who have already given up and surrendered themselves to their fate? Or, are you one of those few, who despite being in adverse circumstances, have full of hope and optimism, and constantly working their way up to reach for the stars?

We are all in the gutter implies that we all have our struggles, hard times and life problems. Being in the gutter means having struggles and challenges all around us, and this is true for everyone. Life is not a bed of roses for anyone, not even for a king. Yet many take it as their fate and stop struggling to better their situation. They play the ‘victim’ card. How they could have accomplished a lot, if only they had certain resources. As a matter of fact, even if they had the resources, they would not have been able to achieve anything. They would have still cribbed and complained for more. What they have to offer to the world is nothing but only excuses.

What Does Looking at the Stars Mean?

Yet there are a few who take this as a challenge to their ability, their potential and their worth. These are the people who are “Looking at the stars”. They are the ones who accept the challenges. They are the ones who find a greater purpose for their lives. They believe that no one is so much poorer even to buy a better tomorrow.

“Some of us are looking at the stars” means that some rare humans, despite the challenges we face are determined to remain positive, remain focused on our dreams and goals. These are ultimately the people who find success in life.

Can One Rise Above the Limit Set by Himself ?

There is an interesting folk story.

A man who had lost all his will to struggle, and was starving for days. He went to the forest to end his life. God appeared before him and asked why he wanted to end his life. Upon his answer God replied that everyone in this world is being taken care of. The man then saw a hungry starving old fox looking for food to survive. He followed the fox and saw that ahead a lion was eating a deer it had hunted. After having his full, the lion left. The old fox immediately had his fill of food. Seeing this the man said to God, “You provide even for a fox. Why did you leave me hungry?”

God replied, “My son, I did not make you a fox. I made you a lion!”

One can imagine the impact of these words!!

Those who see the stars are not foxes; they are the lions. Lions not only hunt for themselves, their efforts enable food for others too.

When one is imbued with a sense of responsibility towards himself and others, he leaves no any effort in reaching for the stars. It requires lots of grit and a mind full of hope that makes one successful in his struggle towards achieving what his life was meant for. Life may not be a bed of roses, one may be in the gutter for some time, but there is nothing stopping a person who has his sights set on the stars.
