Ever had to go through a situation that left you angry and frustrated?
And do you think increasing your levels of anger and frustration has ever helped you do a job more effectively?
So is the case with love and hate. Even though in mathematics, a positive number multiplied by a negative number gives the result as a negative number, such is not the case in the real world.
Martin Luther King Jr. had it absolutely spot on when he said that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
Do Not Respond to Negativities in Kind
But that is not how our mind works, is it? We believe that responding to an aggression with equal or more aggression is the way forward. But remember that an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind!
Love and compassion are the answers to probably every source of misery in our world today. If the ultra-rich of our world showed enough compassion towards their poorer brothers, nobody in this world would have to go hungry.
If every country and their countrymen felt love towards each other, there would be no war and no violence in the world today.
Not only at the macro level but also on the micro level, having a positive attitude towards life and fellow beings can help you in achieving far greater results.
Daniel Kahneman, a Nobel laureate for his work on behavioural economics, has provided empirical evidence that Israeli fighter pilots gave better results when lauded for their actions rather than when being rapped for dismal performances.
This clearly shows that positivity clearly beats negativity and is the best way to beat it in real life.
Positive is as Positive Does
The word is not a zero sum game as many people would like to believe, i.e. you do not have to suffer the same amount of pain as the amount of happiness and love in your life.
Having a positive attitude in life ensures that you always get the best of things or find out the best in things. A bad attitude is the only handicap a person can have.
Thus in order to keep you eternally positive, we have compiled some to-dos for you:
1. Nurture optimism within you like you would nurture a sapling. Write about a positive future you want and visualise it in your head.
2. Be like a tree. A tree braves the heat but provides cool shelter, oxygen and fruits to everything else without giving much thought to its sufferings. Do not dwell on your sufferings. Try to bring in as much positivity in the world as you can.
3. When you do these, you will feel like a bulb (apologies for the bad euphemism) radiating love and warmth into your surroundings.
4. But a bulb might fuse sometimes too. To prevent that from happening, keep yourself away from the negativities in your life as much as you can and love yourself. You cannot love or respect others when you do not love or respect yourself.
Love is the Answer
Thoughts make up a man. When your heart is filled with love, you cannot think about harming any other person and would look only to help him/her get into a better position.
Just imagine if everyone in this world thought this way. There would be no need of guns, bombs, warships or nuclear deterrents.
John Lennon in his song “Imagine” asks us to imagine exactly such a world where there are no boundaries and people live without any fears.
Try and imagine, you will know what he was talking about and know that such a thing is possible!
