Belief in Self is the Starting Point of Success
“In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can.” ― Nikos Kazantzakis

Nikos Kazantzakis was a celebrated Greek writer who wrote widely acclaimed books like Zorba the Greek, and The Last Temptation of Christ. What does this quote from him, “In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can” mean? It means that success is an outcome of our belief; success does not come from outside but from inside of us.

If you yourself do not believe that you can succeed, then no amount of help can make you succeed. Isn’t this true? You must have seen many who failed despite having everything in the world. It is because they were not able to convince themselves that they can succeed.

The Story of the Winning Frog

You may have heard the story of the frog competition, if not, here it is. Once, a group of frog decided to have a competition. The idea was to climb to the top of a tower. The race began and the spectator frogs cheered on. One by one all the champion frogs fell down but one tiny little frog kept on.

The crowd began shouting. “It is too difficult for you… Come down.. Come down!” But the tiny frog continued and made it to the top. Later, when the frogs asked him how he made it, it turned out that the frog was deaf!

The moral of the story is, the frog could not hear the words that he cannot make it. In his belief, he could do it, and he did it. That is the power of belief.

Developing Belief in Yourself

Beliefs are powerful. They give you the strength to go ahead, they keep you focused. Listening to others is a waste of time and energy. Harboring self-doubts changes the way you approach a task. Instead of thinking of winning strategies, one gets lost in the mire of consequences of failure.

It is absolutely essential that you have firm belief in your abilities. But it may not be easy for everyone. If you have lived an over-protected life, or have faced criticism all your life; it will need a lot of self-mastery to overcome this mental handicap. The remedial first step would be to join a self-development group or course.

The Importance of Your Positive Thoughts

It is not easy to drive away the negative thoughts from the mind. A human mind is always active. As psychoanalysts would tell you, the mind keeps dwelling on the id and ego. Thus the thoughts that give pleasure or have any negative hooks are easy to occupy the thoughts most of the time. One way is to always think of positive things and positive aspects of everything.

Having more indulgence with positive things will be a cue to your brain to work at the positive aspects in life. Your thoughts make your attitude, as attitudes are a predisposition that is the sum of the quality of your thoughts. Attitudes, in turn, initiate actions. Having a good attitude will make you act in the right direction.

Reinforcing Your Self-Belief Everyday

Just developing self-belief may not suffice. It should be strong enough to dispel your self-doubts, stand-up against criticism and ridicule from others, able to withstand the disappointments caused by setbacks, hurdles and failures that come across everyone’s life.

So, how do you make your beliefs in you stronger? Remember that a young plant needs to be watered every day. That is what you have to do. Everyday keep on working on your self-belief and make it stronger.

Here are a few ways that may help you:

  • Start Helping Others

Surprisingly, helping others reinforces positive strengths in you. The satisfaction and pride makes you more competent and fulfilled.

  • Develop Equanimity

Work on your emotions. Do not feel very sad if something hurts you. Understand that not everything happens as you wish. Don’t get arrogant to lose your senses when something good happens to you.

  • Think about the Successes and Good Things that had Happened to You

Everyone’s life is full of small successes and good things. But people do not dwell on these, but keep their mind engulfed in what they have lacked.

  • Find Time to Meditate or be with Yourself

This will keep you motivated all day long. The peace of mind that you gain, will let you make the right decisions.

Conclusion

Believing in yourself starts with you. Once you start believing in yourself, you can take initiatives, find opportunities in the worst of situations and start achieving to the extent of your potential. Your success will have no option but to follow you everywhere!
