How To Save and Protect Nature To Reduce Environmental Pollution?
“We are not apart from nature, we are a part of nature. And to betray nature is to betray us. To save nature is to save us.” ― Prince Ea

As a kid, after watching numerous Hollywood movies, I started believing that if the world ever ends, it’ll be because of an alien invasion or nuclear war or even A.I. robots taking over our planet. It’s only now I know that it’s us, humans, degrading our own home to such an extent that it will soon become inhospitable.

Environmental pollution, as defined by ScienceDirect, is “the contamination of the physical and biological components of the earth/atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are adversely affected.” Hence, action needs to be taken to save and protect nature before it’s too late.

Here are 5 things to do in order to Save and Protect Nature and Reduce Environmental Pollution.

How To Save and Protect Nature?

1. Reduce Consumption of Red Meat to Reduce Environmental Pollution

According to Environmental Working Group (EWG), the production and processing of meat requires a large amount of Pesticides, Insecticides, Chemical Fertilizers, etc., releasing a huge amount of methane in our atmosphere. It was found that the production and processing of only red meat is responsible for 10 to 40 times the emission of as much greenhouse gases as common crops and vegetables.

If complete cut-off of meat from the diet is not possible, consumption can be reduced. It goes a long way to reduce environmental pollution and save and protect nature.

2. Save Water

We have all been reading about water conservation since childhood and we know the following things:

  • 97% of water on earth is salt water and is unfit for drinking purpose.

  • Of the remaining 3% of fresh water, only 0.5% is available to us. The remaining is locked in ice caps and glaciers.

Due to climate change, glaciers and ice caps are melting and the fresh water is finding its way to the sea. Not only this, but the groundwater levels are falling too. The most recent city that fell prey to this is Chennai. Soon, the entire country and the world will face the same crisis. In absence of freshwater, the sustenance of life on earth will be impossible.

So, to save and protect nature, it is imperative that we pay attention to water conservation.

Some small changes in everyday habits go a long way. Some of these changes are:

  • Fix the leaks.

  • Conserve electricity to conserve water, as power plants use a huge amount of water to produce electricity.

  • Use a watering can to water your garden.

  • Use the washing machine fully loaded, instead of half full.

3. Compost Kitchen Waste

Composting kitchen waste helps us save and protect the nature to reduce environmental pollution. Kitchen waste from our house makes up a large part of the garbage whose disposal becomes a daunting task. With the landfills piling up and reaching the size of the Taj Mahal, it has become necessary that we not only dispose our waste smartly, but also find ways to reduce it.

It also helps reduce the use of fertilizers in our garden which are very harmful for the environment as they pollute water and soil alike. Hence, to reduce environmental pollution, it is important to inculcate the habit of composting.

4. ALWAYS Recycle Glass to Save and Protect Nature

Glass forms a major part of our waste and is non-biodegradable. Hence, the best option in hand is to recycle glass as many times as we can. Its advantages are many, which include:

  • Reduction in related air pollution by 20% and related water pollution by 50%.

  • Reduction in the amount of waste going to landfills.

  • Energy saving, as the energy required to recycle glass is less than the energy required to produce it from raw materials for the first time.

5. Use Rechargeable Batteries

Batteries have many harmful chemicals in them, which include Cadmium, Mercury and Lead. When dumped into landfills, these chemicals pollute the soil and seep into the water table and other water bodies, eventually poisoning them.

Hence, to save and protect nature and reduce environmental pollution, it is important that we use rechargeable batteries as they can be used again and again. Not only this, but they save money too. Even though the price of an average rechargeable battery is higher than a normal battery, it is cheaper in the long run as it can be recharged numerous times.

Conclusion

“Sooner or later, we will have to recognise that the earth has rights too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but Mother Earth can survive without human beings.”
― Evo Morales

The time and condition now call for a global action against environmental pollution, irrespective of our differences, our biases or our requirements. To save and protect nature we all need to pledge our complete devotion as the time when all the negative changes become permanent isn’t too far. We all need to work hand in hand so that the earth that we borrowed from our ancestors can be passed to the coming generations.

Being a literature student, words flow through my veins. As a result of this, whenever I am down, I start brimming with words and the only thing that relieves me is writing. Writing is meditation for me and the only thing I hope when someone reads my work is that, it brings as much pleasure to its reader as it does to its writer.
