Is Happy Family A Myth?

“Other things may change us, but we start and end with family.”
― Anthony Brandt

We do so much in our lives just to stay happy. We work on our career, excel at our job and try to maintain healthy social relationships. While doing all these things, we forget that we are taking one important component of our life for granted.

We forget that our family, our foundation, also requires as much attention and efforts to work in a proper and healthy way. We forget that a happy family means HAPPY US.

What does a Happy Family Look Like?

There’s no family in the world in which people don’t have their differences. Every relationship has fights, every person is different from another, even in a happy family.

A happy family does not mean that the people don’t fight at all, or agree to everything that the other members say. If this were the case, there would not be a single happy family in the world.

But, that’s not true. People have differences, they fight, they argue, but they live together, bonded by love. They understand their differences and don’t let them overcome their love for each other.

How to Detect the Places where Work Needs to be Done?

I have a theory. I believe that home is not about a place. It’s about people and how they make us feel.

We can be in any part of the world, but there are always a few people who can make us feel safe, make us feel at home even over a call. Those people, I believe are our family.

A happy family feels safe and gives us mental peace. When even being at home makes us feel restless, it’s because there are unresolved issues that need immediate attention.

Some of the signs which indicate this are:

    • There’s a constant feeling of restlessness and fear at home.
    • Even small issues lead to big disagreements and fights.
    • The members always try to find an escape from coming to or spending time at home.
    • There’s always a feeling among the members that they are not being understood.
    • There’s a reluctance to share things with each other among the members.

How to Fill the Cracks?

When there’s a problem, there’s a solution. Even when all the above mentioned issues may surround a family, one thing remains intact – their love for each other – and that is the most important thing, not to let love die.

From this love, germinates the willingness to work on the relationships and make things better. It all comes down to if the members are willing to work for their love, for a happy family. If they do, then the following ideas can help them in improving their relationship with each other.

  • Understanding the Role of Each Member

Each member, whether a child or an old couple, has a role to play in a family and they are equally important as the members in their prime. Understanding that they also have a voice and opinions is important. Their choices should be given equal importance and their participation in the family matters appreciated for a happy family.

  • Respecting Each Other’s Choices

Respecting each other’s choices doesn’t mean letting the members do wrong things in the name of individuality and independence. It simply means not judging them or making them feel small for their choices. Until we are not hurting anybody, including ourselves, I believe, we are free to do as we wish.

  • Talking it Out

People tend to not talk sometimes. They keep their issues to themselves and store them for long periods. What they don’t understand is, that all these issues keep bottling up and when they finally reach their limit, they will blast like an atom bomb, destroying everything in their vicinity and far.

Talking about the things that bother one is very necessary in order to maintain a healthy flux of ideas and even complaints or disappointments, so that nothing remains to rot.

  • Hugging it Out

For me, hugging the people I love is like therapy. It always make things better. So, hug it out. It works like a charm, always.

Conclusion

“Being a family means you are part of something wonderful. It means you’ll love and be loved for the rest of your life.”
― Lisa Weed

What is a happy family? If anyone asks me this question, I’ll always have one and the same answer – a family in which people love each other enough to work on their differences. They are willing to not let petty issues dissolve their love. They love, value and cherish each other. These things make up a happy family.

Being a literature student, words flow through my veins. As a result of this, whenever I am down, I start brimming with words and the only thing that relieves me is writing. Writing is meditation for me and the only thing I hope when someone reads my work is that, it brings as much pleasure to its reader as it does to its writer.
