Qurratulain Hyder, famous Indian novelist was born on 20th January. Her name was kept on a very famous poet “QURRAT-UL-AIN”. One of the famous and best novels which describe the partition of India and Pakistan “AAG KA DARYA” is written by her. It was the first novel of her which got published in Urdu (1959). The story of Aag ka Darya describes the whole situation from the 4th century till the partition time. Her friends and admirers usually call her by the name of “AINEE APA”. Her both of the parents were writers. Her father used to write short stories in Urdu.

Early Career

Qurratulain Hyder had done masters in English literature from Indraprastha college, Noida. Just after the partition of India and Pakistan, she and her mother went to Pakistan. There she saw all the conditions. Then she went to England and started working with BBC. After some years she came back to INDIA and then she settled here only. When she started working in India, she got the breaks as radio and magazine journalist. Then she was also invited to teach and give lectures in URDU in Indian, California, Chicago, Wisconsin, and Arizona universities. She also used to visit a professor at the URDU department, where her father used to serve as a registrar earlier. She is also known as “Grande Dame” of Urdu literature as she started writing her novels in Urdu when the novels were not famous only the poems were deep-rooted.

Her work somewhat includes 12 novels, 4 short stories. She has done a lot of translations of classics. Even her own books were translated into different languages. Qurratulain Hyder is known as the most important voices of the 20th century in India. The first short story of her was published in a magazine of children named as “PHOOL”. The short story name is Bi-Chuhiya (little miss mouse) which became so famous. She wrote her first novel at the age of nineteen. “MAYRAY BHEE SANAM KHANAY” was the name of that novel and through this many people got surprised.

Famous Book

Aag Ka Darya:

It mainly describes four portions of our historical narratives. Buddhism, Hinduism, The coming of Islam and the age of Mughals. Then about the arrival of Britishers and the two world wars and then the partition of India and Pakistan. It describes all the situations of Indian as well as Pakistani people. The emotions are properly described in this book through which anyone can easily understand the situation of the people living there.

Influence

Qurratulain Hyder is one of those writers who will always motivate and influence every generation especially in South Asia. She is still alive in her writings and in the hearts of her followers who read all her books. She was appreciated by President of India because of her work. Even on her death, Chief Minister of her hometown (Uttar Pradesh) and President of India condoled.

Death
