Wisdom To Understand Wisdom - 13 Qualities to Become a Wise Person
β€œIt requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.” ― Walter Lippmann

On a birthday night, I sat thinking about the people who have been along through the journey and helped me through. I felt grateful for their guidance, kindness and the wisdom that they share. That got me thinking about the qualities to become a wise person.

We meet so many people in our life and come across different characters but finding a wise person is not something that happens easily. Indeed one needs wisdom to understand wisdom.

This reminds me of a quote,

β€œIt requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.”
― Walter Lippmann

In this article, I will bring to you a list of qualities of a wise person so you can identify them in your daily life and incorporate them in your life too.

13 Qualities to Become a Wise Person

1. Self-Awareness

They know who they are and have a very good self-image, confidence and self-esteem. They know their limitations as well as positives and work on improvising themselves.

They are aware of their boundaries and ensure nothing affects their inner peace and calmness.

β€œIt takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.”
― Thomas Sowell

2. In Control of One’s Emotions

They are not easily influenced by the emotions around and within them. In fact, managing emotions in itself is a great work of art. Many times when we are triggered by external factors, it is easy to lose one’s cool and react immediately.

But wise people usually respond rather than reacting with anger or any other emotion. That makes all the difference. They are not letting the situation take control of them but take the situation in control.

Here’s an interesting reference.

Often when I get into trouble with a third person for making false accusations on me, I usually react with anger and might even cry but later I understood that it only benefited the other person because they stand strong while I am an emotional mess.

So one day I took control of this situation, worked on the loopholes that enabled that person to make false accusations and set my mind right. When the situation repeated, I stood firm, took time to recollect my thoughts and spoke calmly with the facts. That was the end of it.

So remember, Respond not react.

3. Constant Learning

β€œLearning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets.”
― Leonardo Da Vinci

Learning is a lifelong process. A wise person finds lessons in moving clouds and swaying trees. They are humble and eager to learn.

Live every moment is true but living it so with a well-planned vision is important too. A wise person is someone who can think ahead of time and be ready for what is to come, just like it happens with nature.

Take ants for example which collect food all through summer so that they can enjoy winter. It is just like checking the weather forecast and going out with an umbrella for a possible rainy day.

5. A Wise Person is Patient and Kind

Since they know themselves well, they can also understand what it is to be in difficult situations for others. Hence, they are patient and kind.

Also, they understand the law of nature, what you sow is what you reap. Instead of lashing out at others, they prefer kindness and find a way out of trouble.

6. They are Open to Criticisms and Feedback

One of the most adorable qualities of becoming a wise person is that they are open to criticism and feedback. Rather than taking it as offensive, they try to look through it so they can rectify their mistakes.

In this fast-paced world, judging people has become far too common especially with the reach of the media where everyone can access everyone’s details.

It’s easy to pass comments and bring each other down but not the fair thing to do. Wisdom being a collective knowledge from experiences and learning allows people to see their fellow humans in clearer light without assumptions.

Also when we judge someone, it says a lot about us than the other person. Hence, a wise person will not judge others but help them grow.

8. They are Self-Disciplined

I envy this one, I really do!

To be able to control your mind, body and soul, bringing it in sync with your goals to do what you want to do is a terrific skill to master.

They are focused, they are aware of themselves and life around them and know what they should work for. They don’t allow any distractions to affect their course of conduct.

There are so many beautiful thoughts on self-discipline out there but this one touched my heart,

11. They are Modest and Humble

This takes me back to my school days where my mom always tells me to be modest and humble rather than to show off whatever little talents I had or victories I made in my school.
